AI Share of Voice (AI SoV) measures what fraction of the total brand mentions in your competitive set belongs to your product, when those mentions are counted across AI-generated answers. It is the AI-layer equivalent of the classic marketing metric “share of voice” from advertising.

How AI Share of Voice is calculated

Run a set of representative prompts through one or more AI systems. For each prompt response, record every brand from your competitive set that is mentioned. Count the total mentions per brand. Divide each brand’s count by the total mentions across all brands.

Example: you track five brands (including your own) across 100 prompts. The totals are:

BrandMentionsAI Share of Voice
Competitor A5838%
Competitor B4228%
Your product3020%
Competitor C149%
Competitor D75%

Your AI Share of Voice is 20%. Competitor A owns the category in AI answers with 38%.

AI SoV vs Visibility Score

Visibility Score measures your mention rate in isolation: across your prompts, what percentage include your brand? It does not require competitor data.

AI Share of Voice requires competitor data and expresses your position relative to the market. Both metrics are useful:

  • Use Visibility Score to track your own trajectory over time
  • Use AI Share of Voice to understand your competitive position

A high Visibility Score with a low AI SoV means the AI mentions everyone, including you - but competitors are getting more mentions. A low Visibility Score with a mid-range AI SoV might mean the AI is selective about mentioning anyone, but when it does, you are competitive.

Why this metric matters for SaaS founders

For founders with MRR in the $5k-$200k range, understanding your AI Share of Voice in your category is a leading indicator of brand strength. If your SoV is growing month over month while traffic from AI sources is still small, you are building equity that will convert to signups as more users rely on AI for product discovery.

If your SoV is declining - even if your absolute Visibility Score looks stable - it means competitors are gaining ground in AI recommendations faster than you are.

Limitations

AI Share of Voice is only as accurate as your competitor list. If you are tracking three competitors but there are ten relevant brands, the metric misrepresents the actual landscape. Periodically expand your tracked set and re-baseline.
