AI visibility is your brand’s measurable presence inside AI-generated answers. It is the answer to the question: “When someone asks an AI about my category, how often does my product come up - and how is it described?”

Why AI visibility is its own metric

Before AI answers became mainstream, “brand visibility” meant ranking on page one of Google, appearing in the press, or having a high social media share of voice. Those signals still matter. But AI systems have created a new surface where brand presence is won and lost independently of your Google ranking.

A product can rank #1 for a keyword in Google Search and be entirely absent from ChatGPT’s answers about the same category. The reverse is also true: newer products with little SEO equity but good directory coverage and consistent public documentation sometimes appear in AI answers before their more established competitors.

AI visibility is the metric that captures this new surface. It is distinct from web traffic because an AI answer does not always generate a click - the user may act on the recommendation without visiting your site at all.

The components of AI visibility

AI visibility has several dimensions worth tracking separately:

Mention rate: across a set of representative prompts, in what percentage does your brand appear at all? This is your headline number.

Position: when you are mentioned, where do you appear in the answer? Being named first carries more weight than being listed fifth.

Sentiment: is the language the model uses about your product positive, neutral, or negative?

Coverage across models: you may have good visibility in ChatGPT but poor visibility in Perplexity. Each model draws on different sources and has different patterns of which brands it cites.

Prompt type coverage: are you mentioned in “best tool for X” prompts but absent in “how to do Y” prompts? Coverage gaps reveal where your content strategy has holes.

Tracking AI visibility over time

A single measurement of AI visibility is a snapshot. What matters for business decisions is the trend. Is your visibility improving after you published a new guide? Did it drop after a competitor launched? Did a specific AI model stop mentioning you after an update?

AskRank runs a defined set of prompts across multiple AI systems on a schedule, records every result, and plots your visibility score over time. When your score drops by more than a threshold you set, it sends an alert so you can investigate before the impact reaches your bottom line.

Visibility vs traffic

It is worth being clear about what AI visibility does and does not tell you. Visibility measures presence in AI-generated answers. It does not measure the direct commercial impact of that presence. Some categories convert well from AI referrals; others see high AI mention rates but few resulting signups.

The practical approach is to track both: monitor AI visibility with AskRank, and monitor AI-sourced sessions in your analytics (look for referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and claude.ai, as well as direct sessions that may be unattributed AI-influenced visits). Over time you will develop a sense of how much your AI visibility correlates with actual acquisition.
